Christmas Decorations from America’s Mansion

2004 Washington D.C. Christmas

While visiting family in the Dallas area, my Uncle suggested we attend the opening of a holiday exhibit. The actual holiday decorations used in the 2004 White House are now on display at the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum. History and Christmas: two of my all-time favorite topics.

Decorations that are planned and approved by each First Lady become part of that Presidential Library inventories and are stored for future exhibits. In 2004, First Lady Laura Bush chose the theme A Season of Merriment and Melody which included decorations featuring beloved Christmas songs.

I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas

Thirteen holiday melodies were selected and vignettes were placed on mantels and tables throughout the people’s mansion. These vignettes were created by resident staff in 2004 and are a real joy for the eyes. The attention to detail is unbelievable from the fabrics, fur on the animals, and the delicately painted faces.

Jingle Bells

To commemorate Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas”, 41 flocked trees were illuminated with gold and white lights and placed in the Grand Foyer and Cross Hall in 2004. The official White House Christmas Tree stood in the Blue Room, a tradition first begun by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. I was surprised to learn how much of the holiday observances at the White House mansion are actually passed down through each First Lady. I am so proud that our country’s traditions are honored and continued by our First Families.

You can see these hand-painted ornaments used in 2004 at the White House now through January 8, 2017.

In 2004 the noble fire featured hand-painted musical instruments by members of the Society of Decorative Painters. A total of 350 ornaments were selected, represented by members of chapters from all fifty states. The detail on these tiny violins, harps, drums, pianos, trumpets, maracas, and tambourines is truly amazing. This tree is definitely a must see, if you are in the Dallas area this holiday season.

The docents in the exhibit were extremely knowledgeable and friendly, and willing to share interesting insights on life in the White House. It has always been my hope to one day visit the White House in the nation’s capitol. This exhibit certainly provided a fascinating glimpse into the mansion that has become such an important symbol of our country’s heritage.

If you’re any where near the Dallas, Texas area this holiday season, you will be well rewarded by time spent at this Christmas exhibit. The George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum is located at 2943 SMU Boulevard, Dallas, TX 75205. Here’s the website:  http://georgewbushlibrary.smu.edu
